What looks good on a UCAS application?

Volunteering

Volunteer work can demonstrate your dedication to a skillset acquired outside of formal education. You'll find there is a variety of volunteering opportunities in your local area that can accommodate school hours and social life.

Work Experience

Course-related or otherwise work experience is a great way to stand out amongst other applicants and show you are committed and hard-working.

Languages

Languages look great on applications. They show dedication, and independent learning and open up a wider range of career opportunities. Only 38% of UK citizens can speak a second language - this puts you at a huge advantage whether English is your mother tongue or not.

For the other 62%, your high school or sixth form may offer language lessons or clubs. The Duolingo app is also a free and accessible option for more casual learning.

Clubs (in and outside of school)

Your school/sixth form will host a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities. In your school career, you have probably been a member of sports teams, after-school art programmes, or film clubs. Participation in something you are passionate about shows prospective universities that you are eager to participate in your community.

Achievements

If you've participated in clubs, you possibly have a few awards or certificates for your participation already. Whether it is earned as a team or awarded for your own merits; these achievements have value and are worth a mention.

Awards in volunteering like the Duke of Edinburgh are also impressive on paper. DofE is also a great environment to build social skills and gain confidence - both are great preparation for university.
