As results day draws closer here at the University of Bolton, we do often accept students through Clearing. Clearing can be a stressful time for parents and guardians so here are some helpful tips to prepare and know what to do during the Clearing process.
What is Clearing?
Clearing is for students who want to go to university but didn't receive their required grades or no longer want to go to their Firm or Insurance university choices. It is also an opportunity for any students who did not manage to get a university offer.
1. How can I be supportive the day before?
If your child is nervous about their results, it’s a good idea to think about their 'plan B' in advance of results day, and to discuss Clearing with them as a worthwhile option. This will help make the often-daunting thought of Clearing easier on the day. Aside from preparing for Clearing it is a good idea to make some fun plans in the days running up to results so that they can keep their mind off their results.
We did a lot of talking as a family. It's an obvious thing but we reassured her that she had tried her hardest, and whatever the outcome, we were proud of everything she had achieved. We also planned a few treats in the run up to results day like a trip to London, [going to the] theatre, etc to try to take her mind off it. - Julie, Portsmouth (Parent)
If it doesn't go to plan on the day just make sure they have their UCAS login and Personal Statement ready.
2. On the day
If they just miss out on their place it is a good decision to give the university a call and see if they have any places to offer; they can look through the courses we still have available on the UCAS Clearing section. If it best to apply for the courses in Clearing once they are firmly set on their decision as courses are snapped up quickly but make sure they don't rush and pick the wrong course.
