If you do not meet the entry requirements, have a portfolio, or experience in Special Effects and Make-up or a related creative field then a foundation year may be offered instead. Please see our other FAQ's and resources about foundation years, entry requirements and portfolios for more details.
This probably means that we would like to see some more examples of good quality work, showcasing the skillsets that you are starting with. The course is very popular and as a result, the standard of work in a portfolio should be high. Portfolios should be presented clearly and you must be able to talk through your work with knowledge of the processes and materials you have used in the creation of the assets you are showcasing.
If you have no or little artwork based around the anatomy, perhaps take a life drawing class before you consider re-applying, buy a book on the anatomy and start to sketch forms, after all, your first project might be the creation of a zombie which involves anatomical knowledge down to the core! If you can take some time out to concentrate on sculpting, drawing, application and colouration techniques you might have a better chance of securing a place on SMUFX in the future, as you may re-apply with an updated portfolio, or have some understanding of core skills and techniques that can be enhanced through a foundation year.
If you have any other enquiries relating to this you can contact the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Team to discuss, their contact details can be found at the bottom of the specific course page by searching the Special Effects and Make-Up subject area.
Alternatively, chat with our current students who will be able to share this information with you and any other course-related queries.
