Student Experience

How do I become a student course representative?

Course Reps are there to represent the views of their cohort, they attend two Student-Staff Liaison Committees (SSLC) in an academic year. You can speak to your Course Rep about academic issues, however it can be difficult to know if your issue is appropriate, but your Course Reps will signpost you to services and staff within the university if necessary. The Students’ Union Student Engagement Team attends lectures at the start of teaching weeks in semesters one and two.

At these shout outs, the role of Course Rep will be explained and you will have an opportunity to ask questions. During this time you will have the opportunity to nominate yourself to be a Course Rep.

An election will be held and if your classmates agree, you are one step closer to becoming a Course Rep. There is a maximum of 2 Course Reps per course.

You can also chat with our staff directly every Wednesday from 2 pm - 4 pm and periodically throughout the working week.

Alternatively, chat with our current students who will be able to share this information with you and any other course-related queries.

Or book onto one of our Open Days or Course Advice Days to find out more and speak with the team.

If your Course Rep has decided to leave the role, this may provide you with a chance to put yourself forward to be the Course Rep. You can either ask your lecturer about the role and how to apply or you can come directly to the Students’ Union in Chancellor’s Mall for more information. Some of the main rewards and benefits of this role are:

  • An impressive addition to your CV.
  • Develop problem-solving skills.
  • Develop research and evaluation skills.
  • Possibility to influence policies and decision-making at the University of Bolton.
