Interviewing is a common part of the university application process for many courses. It could be an interview or audition, or you might be asked to provide examples of your work – a portfolio or an essay, for example. Here are some interview tips for students and parents/guardians to be prepared for the interview process.
1. Plan ahead
Being prepared for an interview is always better than being unprepared. Staff can usually tell the students who spent time preparing. Make sure you have your date and time ready, and you try and attend as rearranging interviews can be difficult. Practicing interview questions is always a good way to prepare for anything you may be asked. Have your questions prepared that you want to ask the staff too! Make sure to sleep well so you're fully rested before the interview.
2. The interview
Going to an interview can seem like a scary experience, but preparation is key to feeling confident and understanding what the course requires of its students.
Turning up well and appropriately dressed, being punctual, and having your documents and talking points or questions prepared is key to higher chances of success. Even if you have an online interview make sure you have the link ready and working on time and are dressed appropriately. Stay alert, engaged, and sat up straight while conversing with the interviewer, remembering your body language, eye contact, and tone of voice.
3. Afterwards
Taking notes is always a good way to improve on your interview skills and reflect on what you've spoken about, especially if you have asked specific questions to the interviewer. If unsuccessful at this stage, it is especially useful to note areas you can expand on next time after you ask for interview feedback from the interviewer. Additionally, you will also remember what has been discussed so that you can gain relevant experience to meet those points and prepare for an interview next time.
All that's left to do then is wait. Once a decision has been made staff will get in contact with you via your email address. You can get in touch with the interviewer for feedback.
